The Neighbourhood
Welcome back to another music Friday! Today is all about the amazing band The Neighbourhood.
Now I honestly don't remember how I discovered them - I know I heard their song on a TV show sometime last year but because I have the worst memory I don't remember which show. Well any who, it doesn't matter now, I'm just glad I found them.
They're an alternative rock band from California with Jesse Rutherford as the vocalist, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, drummer Brandon Fried and bassist Mikey Margott. They've been together since 2011 and their first single Female Robbery was released with very little splash. They released it into the music universe with no flashy advertisement or anything and surprisingly this paid off as it came back to them a bigger success than when released. Soon people all over the internet and radio began picking it up and the rest is history. Their popularity grew even more with the release of their single Sweater Weather. They've since been on major platforms from Live on Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, Coachella, SXSW and more. They released their debut album I Love You and are currently on their tour, Le Tour Noir. Oh and the hot shots have also got a new single on the new Amazing Spider-Man 2 soundtrack so, there's that.
What I am absolutely obsessed with when it comes with this band is their vibe. Everything from their music to their persona is so moody and transcendent. They're known for their black and white imagery that's carried out across everything from their videos, artwork and music. The lead singer's voice is also so haunting and just works perfectly with their whole vibe. And always a plus, they write their own music. Their lyrics are so eery and unique and I love that they know exactly who they are as artists and what they want to be as a band. Oh and they also sound just as amazing live which just makes everything about them even more better (check out their Live on Letterman set). Honestly, when I listen to their music it just takes me to an unexplainable place. It's almost like an otherworldly, out of body experience. Their music takes you to a specific place that's just so unexplainably moving. I don't know I might sound like I'm crazy or high right now but you just have to listen to their songs - close your eyes and just listen and you'll get it.
Female Robbery
This is the first song I listened to of theirs and I was hooked
Sweater Weather
So, I've literally been listening to this song on repeat as I wrote this post and will continue to do so for, like, ever (also has one of my favourite lines "Head in the clouds but my gravity's centred")
Afraid
Another favourite song with another favourite lyric - "When I wake up I'm afraid somebody else might take my place" - really, aren't we all?
Staying Up
Honest
Their single from the Spiderman soundtrack
Say My Name/Cry Me A River
This was from a random acoustic session and I just loved the way they covered these two songs - who'd have thought The Neighbourhood, Destiny's Child and Justin Timberlake would go together?
