Spring Fashion Trends 2014 - Part One

Spring Fashion Trends 2014

Welcome back beauties! Spring has sprung (well not here yet - today it was -7 but it’s the thought that counts) and I’m so excited to share with you the top 10 Spring trends you should try this season - inspired straight from the runways of New York, Paris, London and Milan fashion weeks.

There were SO many amazing trends this round of Fashion Weeks so I decided to split up the list into two parts - the second half will come next week so stay tuned! Until then lets jump right into our first 5 must-try Spring trends for 2014.

1. Kimonos
Kimonos
I absolutely am obsessed with this trend. I always appreciated how elegant traditional kimonos looked so you can see how excited I am that this piece has been been translated into modern fashion. Obviously the kimonos on runways are a little more extravagant but many stores now carry multiple variations on this look (Forever21 has a great selection). You can totally dress one down with a pair of jeans and a simple tank or dress it up a little with a pair of leather shorts - it’s completely up to you. There are many types of kimonos to choose from so look for the one that suits you.

2. Dainty White

Dainty White

Talk about angelic. White completely took over the runways this season but what interested me the most were the dainty white pieces. What do I mean by dainty you ask? Literally anything that looks like lace, embroidered or could be described using the words angelic, romantic or whimsical. It can be as simple as a lace neckline, sleeve or even the whole top. This trend is just the perfect way to float into Spring.

3. Crop Tops
Crop Tops
Don’t be scared! I know the word ‘crop top’ can scare people sometimes (believe me it scared me for a long time) but this was one of the biggest trends on the runway. What I like about this trend is that although it may not seem like it, ALL body types can rock this look (in fact #2, #4, #6, #10 are all plus sized!). If you’re more comfortable with showing a little skin, there are many crop tops that do just that. However, for those like me who are a little reluctant to show skin (I’ve got a spare tire around my waist and that ain’t pretty sticking out of a crop top) or want a more modest look you can find more loose fitting crop tops (like #4, #5 and #9) but the key is to wear a high waisted bottom. Whether it be a skirt, shorts or pants, anything high waisted will help adjust your proportions all while being able to wear the trend.

4. Walking Art

Walking Art
Oooh, I take it back - this right here has to be my FAVOURITE trend. The most popular anchor from this trend was from Prada. Their runway was filled with pop art pieces like the coat above. Now I’ll have to admit, this trend took awhile for me to get used to but I’ve grown to love it. Now obviously no one is going to walk down the streets with a big face on their coat so a great way to incorporate this trend into everyday is to look for prints on a smaller scale. I found some amazing pieces from Zara that had so many great prints from literal brush strokes to geometric prints. Basically, if you could take a square of the print on the piece of clothing and you can’t tell whether it’s an actual painting or photograph, or if it’s a fabric print, it’s on trend.

P.S. - This is what I meant by not being able to tell if it's real art or fabric - these are all patterns from the clothes above! Isn't it crazy how it looks like real art?
5. Asymmetrical
Asymmetrical
Now I feel like along with ‘crop top’ people get the wrong impression when they hear ‘asymmetrical’. But trust me, there is a way to make this work for everyday! Instead of going for an asymmetrical neckline, look for an asymmetrical hemline, from a tiny one in a skirt to a more daring one in a top. But make sure if you are playing with this trend, keep everything else in proportion. If you’re wearing an asymmetrical top like #9, pair it with something simple like some light wash jeans or black shorts. And if you’re more into the skirts, try a simple top tucked in or if you’re more daring, try a crop top. Remember with this trend simplicity is the key - don’t overwhelm the already bold trend. With a little practice the possibilities for this trend are endless!
