Met Gala 2014 Red Carpet

Met Gala 2014 Red Carpet

Welcome back to Caught Red Bottomed! Last night was my absolute FAVOURITE night of the year, the annual Costume Institute Gala aka the Met Gala. People who say awards shows like the Oscars are the biggest night in fashion are wrong. THIS right here is really the biggest night in fashion and an opportunity for celebrities and the biggest names in fashion to come together in the name of fashion. Now let's get down to the best and worst looks of the gala!

Queen of the Gala

No question about it, SJP was the queen of the entire gala. She completely embodied the "White Tie and Decorations" theme. She looked absolutely elegant and the dress was beautifully crafted by the one and only Oscar De La Renta (if you didn't notice the beautifully embroidered signature at the back). Plus, I felt like SJP was having such a Carrie Bradshaw moment in this gown. There were so many people on the carpet last night that tried to go for the ball gown look but Sarah was the only one that was able to pull off this elegant and classic look. It was fabulous.

Fashion Rebels

As I've mentioned before, Lupita Nyong'o has become my new favourite on the red carpet and I couldn't wait to see what she was going to wear. Now although it wasn't really on par with the theme of the night (does anyone even really follow it?) she looked fabulous. This was the most fun look of on the carpet and one of the biggest fashion moments of the night. The detail on that Prada net dress was so well done and the choice to have a slip almost close to her skin tone made the entire look come together. My other favourite fashion icon is of course the daring Rihanna. Now although she let me down on the MTV Movie Awards Red Carpet, she completely brought it on this carpet. Crop tops were a huge trend on this carpet and Rihanna pulled it off the best. Everything from the fit, to the effortless updo and the long train brought the look together. That beaded choker added a touch of elegance and I loved how the crop top revealed just a touch of her beautiful tattoo.

Young Starlets

I've been such a huge fan of Taylor's red carpet fashion lately. This Oscar De La Renta dress literally screamed out Taylor's name. The colour and cut of the dress was so elegant and poised while the beautiful detail at the back of the dress added structure and interest to the dress. Plus her 1940s makeup and hair complemented the feminine and elegant vibe of the dress. I have to say the biggest surprise of the night was Hailee Steinfeld. Where did this little starlet come from?! She totally proved that she can look elegant enough for the occasion without looking too over the top or old. The Prabal Gurang dress was beautifully tailored and the simple black and white colour combo worked perfectly to create a modern yet sophisticated look for this 17 year old starlet. Personally, I believe this young starlet was dressed even better than some of the big name Hollywood stars. She makes me have hope for the future of fashion in Hollywood.

Ball Gown Remix

Karolina Kurkova is one of my favourite models hands down. One of my all time favourite Met Gala looks has to be hers from the 2012 Met Gala when she wore that beautiful sequinned Rachel Zoe with matching turban. I LOVE to see fashion risks like that especially at an event dedicated for fashion. And she brought that level of risk this year too. Marchesa creates some of the most beautiful dresses and are my favourite designers but this dress was something else. It was almost like walking art. The structure of the dress was unreal and the beautiful white floral design looked almost painted on. Now I'll admit, I didn't know much about Suki Waterhouse but she sure caught my interest on this carpet! This two toned pale pink dress was one of the most elegant things on the carpet. Her sophisticated undo and red lip brought the whole look together and turned heads in this modern interpretation of a ball gown.

Met Missteps

Katie Holmes: Though the theme was white tie, Katie ended up looking like a bad version of Princess Belle from Beauty and the Beast. This gown was hideous and completely unflattering. Plus the total 'I just rolled out of bed hair' didn't work at all.
Lena Dunham: I'm sorry but this whole thing was just wrong. The mullet cut just didn't work on her and the weird cut of the dress actually made Lena look a lot bigger than she is. This dress was not Met Gala worthy and the fit was totally unflattering.
Rachel McAdams: More like Rachel McBoring! This look was the most drab and underwhelming thing on the carpet. I have to admit, her hair and makeup do look great and she is such a beautiful woman, but the colour of the dress was completely washing her out and was way too simple to be worn at the biggest event in fashion!
Shailene Woodly: I really have no idea what's going on here. This dress is just bad. The top half looks like a wool suit got mangled with a dress from the 80s. Plus that sheer bottom isn't doing her any favours. This dress had one too many ideas going on and made Shailene look 10x older when she should've been dressed more youthfully.
Maggie Gylenhaal: No words. Now this looks like something someone would've wore to the disco in the 70s. The pattern overall just looked so drab and outdated and not a single colour worked with her platinum blonde pixie cut.
Michelle Williams: Sorry Michelle, but I think you're at the wrong event! Until I see one that completely blows my mind, I think short dresses for this event are just wrong. It's the Met Gala. This is the one time where you can be bold with fashion and she choose to wear this? It almost looks like she went out to dinner with friends and decided to stop by the gala if she had time. Total missed opportunity here.
Kate Upton: Why Kate why?? I was confused about whether she was going for a Mexican Folk dancer or an old west saloon look. It was just confusing. She's a young and beautiful model and this whole look made her appear double her age and matronly.
Zoë Saldana: This really killed me because usually Zoë's style is phenomenal but this dress really missed the mark. That weird balloon shaped skirt was so horrible it almost looked like she was trying to smuggle something in under her skirt! The cut and the hot air balloon vibe of the skirt was so unflattering and the weird almost body suit top was disjointed from the theatrical and overwhelming bubble skirt bottom.

The Couple That Dresses Together...

These couples truly killed it on the carpet last night. The men looked dapper with the biggest trend of the night being the white blazer as seen on Joshua Jackson, Michael Sheen, Jay Z and David Beckham. And although others chose to go classic with their looks like Ryan Reynolds and Sean Penn, some chose to play into the theatrics and extravagance of the night and play on the white tie theme with regal tail coats like Johnny Depp and John Legend. As for the ladies, some chose to match their white coated other halves in elegant white gowns while stars like Chrissy Teigen and Amber Heard chose to go neutral and match their dapper men in metallics. However my favourites have to be Sarah Silverman with her bold but beautifully crafted ball gown, Blake Lively with her gorgeous embroidered rose gold gown and cape and Beyonce in her beautifully beaded black dress. These couples truly complemented each other and were dressed appropriately for the charity gala.
